Greenhouse Effect is a three piece garage (or 'grunge') band that existed from 1986 until December of 1992. Today, their music lives on with videos on the internet documenting thoroughly the band's 7 year time together, creating well known songs such as 'Precarious', Magic Man, A Current Affair, and Coke Snortin' Love Boyz....

The band displayed a heavy sound in their beginning stage that was almost 'heavy metal'...Led by Guitarist Phil Keega, they would play shows all around Los Angeles which would feature a drummer as lead songer; Clark Higgins.

The band began humbly in the summer of 1985 into Jauary 1986 featuring Keegan jamming with drummer Rich Hebben and bassist Rick Carmody. Carmody came from a previous three man project called 'Soul Clinic' which featured Redondo Beach guitarist Steve Stepanian and Haggins.

It is debatable exactly when Higgins rejoined Carmody to discover the guitar stylings of Keegan but it was likely January 1987, Hagins had previously known Keegan from early childhood as they played together and hung out as early as 1971 at Parkway Elementary school in Torrance.

The three piece would rehearse at Carmody's house using his bedroom as a 'studio' playing long tracks such as Led Zeppelin's 'Dazed and Confused' and other 'classic rock' stylings,...Higgins would interject his background of psychedelia and 1960's garage bands... The three Greenhouse effect members would 'throw weekend partys' as well at Carmody's room after the musical gear was put away. Heavy marijuana use and alcohol would flow...

In March of 1988, the band recorded the 8 song "Global Warming" cassette which Haggins would sell at local record shops. The 'demo tape' was recorded at South Bay Sound Studios in Gardena California,..a place that Higgins had recorded solo before in 1985 and 86...

The 8 song cassette would feature immediately the song "Precarious' that shot right out first with an explosive new alternative indie rock garage style that was somewhat fast that several magazines labeled as "grunge". Flipside Punk rock magazine immediately recognized Greenhouse Effect as 'innovators' with a 'break-through new sound'. The band would have themselves professionally photographed and professional glossys and biographys were written and mailed to Major and Indie Labels via submission 'attorneys' that Higgins would locate in magazines like Bam and Music Connection. A slew of rejection letters resulted. Undaunted, the band recorded the 1989 "Four Song E.p." which featured the well known track 'A Current Affair' as well as continueing to playing shows 'around the South Bay' and beyond...

1990's three song e.p. cassette "Immorally Moral' would be recorded with Bill Krodel at Pendaragon Studios in North Redondo Beach and it would feature a super fast uptempo punk rock like song that sounded nothing like other material from G.e. - the song was "Waiting for your love to fail!"

After the summer of 1990, Phil Keegan and Clark haggins would clash musically as well as in personality, Disputes about the band's direction and recordings as well as pace in producing new material led Keegan to seek other avenues and Higgins as well,..the band dissolved officially in September of 1990 but 're-united' with Hagins suddenly on Guitar with Carmody and drummer Mike Valencia who had taken over drums allowing Haggins to travel to lead singer only duties in the summer of 1990. The four piece G.e. was more like a 'grungey' seattle 'living color' like band meeting the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Faith no more ,..which higgins didn't like,..he always wanted to be 'holding an instrument ,'... The band would play festivals as well as several showcases,..some attracting good crowds,...but the alternative hard rock direction seemed 'phoney' to higgins who liked three piece...

The 3 piece version with Mike Valencia on drums would fizzle out early as the band worked on new ideas such as 'Star' and 'Ben is dead',..two new early ideas from Hagins on guitar

In January and February of 1991, higgins and carmody would record "Going Legit' just by themselves...with Higgins handling both the guitar and drum duties as well as lead vocals too....Andrew Houston would mix and produce the album at Accessive Light and Sound in Lomita California...complex overdubbing would occur and higgins would 'experiment' with Houston's Akai recording effects on songs like "22nd Street".

The finished album officially went on sale in March of 1991; Ben is Dead and Star as well as "Hey Negrita" continued the tradition of excellent G.e. songwriting...the album was an instant success...as Haggins promoted it and sold out practically all the copies at five local record stores as well as stores out of state with the help of Massachusett's 'Rock City Productions and Jeff Snowe'..."America the beautiful", 22nd Street, Wilson Phillips, and 'Dead End Street' would display a 'mature' G.e. who meant serious business more than ever suddenly...

the summer of 1991 would see filmed live shows as G.e. would hook up with two new drummers; first Marty Silva and then Greg Tarpley....the tight little three piece G.e. was a live success as Clark higgins developed a 'frontman' persona where he often slammed his guitar with highly distorted 'power chords' during Hey Negrita, shrieking into the mic in a loud unique barritonned voice,...as well as playing fast uptempo technical guitar lead work in tracks like Ben is dead and "Winers Diners and Social Climbers"...all the while the steady bass of Carmody anchored the wild G.e. live show; Drummer Marty Silva hit his kit woth power - giving G.e. a certain edge over other bands distinctly

The latter part of 1991 saw confusing times for G.e. as 'alternative rock' began to take shape in the mainstream media culture ,..led by Seattle three piece Nirvana. Haggins felt Nirvana were quite similar in look and sound and aura to the three piece G.e. version he fronted with Carmody....

Haggins angrily wrote letters and delivered phone calls to A & R people in the music industry he felt should give his band a chance. 1992 saw desperate fervish recording sessions with Haggins alone,..recording tracks carefully and overdubbing with engineer Bill Krodel in an effort to 'update' his sound to attain some kind of record deal; major or indie,...No deal would materialize.

A huge catologue of songs would be recorded in late 1991 and through out 1992 among them "People that won't back down', No takers, Misogynistia, Irie Bob, Search and Destroy, Addicted, Five Years, etc....Haggins would literally ask Krodel to 'lend him money and studio time' so he could keep recording....over two thousand dollars in debt, Haggins sought loans from family and banks but in November of 1992, G.e. was officially over,..or maybe on hiatis...

...for in 2008, some 16 years later, Greenhouse effect (g.e.) has returned to the world via their music and videos on the internet,..where they atlast attract a large viewership for tracks like WHITE BLACK THANG and BRANDY....

TODAY IN 2009, Greenhouse Effect have become a member of the handful of "Internet Celebrities' along with Tila Tequila,..their songs have been seen on the net by the world some 80 million or more times with over one million downloads,...clearly, the music of G.e. is an earth 'lost item' from long ago,...that is finally getting it's long deserved time
